Update

Mike has been home almost a week now and has been healing nicely. He had a visiting nurse come by and check everything it things look good. His sacral wound looks really good and is shrinking a little, which is awesome. He has really been comfortable being able to wear regular boxers and all and seems to just be a lot more up beat. He can't start therapy until next week so he has been home alone this week with people checking in on him every few hours. He is adjusting well and doing fine on his own for these short periods of time. I think he likes being independent (a little at a time) He seems really proud of t he fact that he can manage on his own for a bit.

Well, that's the last hurdle for now. Next comes the DORS Program for learning a new trade, which is the pathway to getting his drivers license and the Van further modified for him for free by the State. It looks like he has this all set up. His former boss told me they may try to set up a position for him so he can work in the office reading and working on plans / blueprints for fire alarm systems, which became his specialty before he got hurt. He used to install and wire them, now he might be able to do the other side of that. If that works out, he can show the County/State he has a job waiting for him and that could expedite things for him. AND he wouldn't have to be retrained in some other profession.

I will keep you all up to date as these things progress.

Jeff, This is the most awesome post about Mike in a while! Everything is on the upswing. I am so happy - there are tears in my eyes. Mike's physical healing is going well - and the decision to have the last surgery was a very good one. So much more comfortable and better for Mike - and a definite plus as he regains more and more independence. There is nothing that will hold him back. The DORS Program sounds so exciting too - getting Mike ready for new challenges - which he will ACE. His former boss knows what he has in Mike - and it would be incredible if a position is created to have him back! Anything that Mike does - he does extremely well - and he'll be great at the other side of what is already his expertise. We are so proud of Mike - always - and he must certainly be pretty proud of himself! This spring will be a very busy and productive one. Love you Mike; see you in exactly one month (and we'll be talking soon about Opening Day at Fenway on Monday, April 6!) Congratulations Mike. - Aunt Nancy

This is the most wonderful news about Mike! I am so grateful that this last surgery is making him so much more comfortable and independent. And so glad to hear he feels happy about this and all the plans coming up for road to recovery. The job his old boss is thinking about will be so good for him, and they will be so lucky to have Mike back. He can and will do anything! The driving and van accommodations are so great for Mike to look forward to also. We are so, so happy and proud of Mike and hope his spirits improve as he continues to make great progress. See you all soon, and cannot wait to give Mike the biggest hug. Go Red Sox -- Go Mike!!! Love to all,
Aunt Susan

I couldn't be happier right now. Reading this post just shows Mike's strength and determination. We all knew he was/is a fighter and that he'll let nothing stand in his way. Just to hear that he is more comfortable all around is amazing, and it's even more amazing to read that he is getting along on his own for short periods of time. All positives steps in the right direction. Mike's boss obviously sees what we all see (and know about) in him. Mike, you are an amazing man and I have always looked up to you. This is just one more reason to make me even more proud of "my big cousin Mike". I can't wait to see you. Keep working hard and stay positive. Love you tons!!!

Love,
Robin
