Making Progress

Mike has been at NRH for a few weeks now and things are settling down. His wound is healing and he is in full time threapy every day again. His blood counts are still whacky, but the Dr. says they have determined that those counts are now going to be normal for him. SCI patients often have all kinds of strange effects on their other body chemestry. So says Dr. Smooth, (Lea) which is what Mike calls him. He thinks he is way too full of himself and loves to tell him so.....That;s our Gotz! Anyway, it's good to see him getting healthier and stronger and to see him laughing agian.

Unfortunatley he has other issues to worry about like cuts in Medicaid by the State which could mean a lot more oout of pocket expenses to him in the near future. It seems the wonderful state of Maryland thinks that if you make more tha $350 a month, you can afford your own benefits!!! Well it's all to much to get into here, and Mike's Mom is working hard to get all the info on how he can get the most out of his Medicaid so we'll keep our fingers crossed. Anyway, thanks to Crystal we have started to put together the now annual Mike Gotzens Foundation Golf Tournament for May 2, and the Mike Gotzens Foundation Harley Poker Run will be March 28th. These two events should help out a lot!! Keep looking here on th Blog for updates.

More good news! Mike is being taken out in a van tomorrow for a lesson on assisted driving and how it works and a driving assessment!! This is the beginning of him working his way back behind the wheel!! (Oh oh!!!) It will take some time, but he is really excited and so am I.

I'll keep you posted on his progress.

I'm so glad that Mike is doing better, seeing him on Saturday he seemed really upbeat and positive as always!

I can't wait to start working on another golf tourny for Mike and I'm very confident that it will be even more successful then the last:)

It is AMAZING that Mike will get to start behind the wheel soon, he must be so excited.

Stay Strong Mike! Love u.

Jeff - Thanks for the latest post - and a very positive and good one it is! Mike did indeed sound really great when he and I spoke over the weekend. The doctors at NRH are getting to the source of most of the recent problems - and it is full steam ahead for Mike and his therapy. We all know that doctors and staff at NRH must love Mike - his humor and his incredible personality and patience. I wish I could witness his smile right now. The issues with Medicaid (even before cuts were made - unbelievable) are very disturbing - but Mike will never have to want for anything. His family and friends are behind him all the way - as witnessed by Crystal and Shannon and your planning already more fundraising events. Can't wait for those after the success of the first events. And you saved the best for last - the news of Mike getting lessons on assisted driving to eventually be back behind the wheel is truly exciting to hear! Good luck with that Mike. He has already mastered his other 2 sets of wheels! We Love You Mike. Talk to you soon - Aunt Nancy

Good new all around for Mike! And like Nancy said, Mike will never have to worry about getting whatever he needs. We all will make sure he does! So great that he back in therapy full time and so cool that he will be getting lessons on assisted driving! Hopefully all his health setbacks are behind him so he can keep up with it all. Love to Mike, and wish I could be there for a big hug! Thanks, Jeff, for the good news.
Love,
Aunt Susan
