Local Rehab Centers

I came home to do on site tours of the Rehabilitation Hospitals hear today. The recommended ones were Adventist Rehab at Shady Grove, National Rehabilitation Hospital in DC and Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. I thought NRC was by far the best of the bunch but we will give all the information to Mike and let him make the decsion, with our advice. NRH and God Sam are the top 2 in this region, and NRH runs one of only 14 Spinal Cord Injury Model programs in the nation.

If anyone wants to take a look a these places;

Good work Jeff. I plan to study these 3 rehab sites tonight. We all agree that the decision is Mike's, but also that he deserves the very, very best. What a wonderful, happy post from Kim about Jean's report on Michael today - Everybody is smiling.

Thanks for the update Jeff. Michael definitely deserves the absolute best, but like you said, it's Mike's decision. We are looking at the links you posted for the various facilities. Lots of love to Mike!

Jeff and Jean,

I took a look at the links for all 3 rehabilitation centers that you visited, and think that all 3 centers look promising. The main advantage for either Adventist/Rockville or Good Samaritan/Baltimore is, of course, proximity to home. All 3 offer wonderful services to both the client and their families.

One of the more important things that was emphasized right away on the National Rehabilitation Hospital/D.C.'s website - was the immediate attention paid to both the medical and psychological needs. Of course, all 3 centers provide treatment for both needs - but, I thought that National Rehab stood out - even though the distance to D.C. is more difficult. And, as Jeff reports - it is one of only 14 spinal cord injury model programs in the country.

I was also impressed by their site's mention of the electro-stimulation equipment, aquatic facilities, and robotic-assisted techniques. Lisa McKenna emphasized the importance of electro-stimulation and aquatic therapy (and hand splints as may be needed) - to rehab therapy to the patient.

It looked as though average length of stay at a rehab center is 4 weeks (I may not be correct) - before Mike is back home. I see proximity to home as the only "con" on the list for National Rehabilitation.

Our thoughts are with you as you guide Mike in making this decision.

Love to Mike and to all of YOU from Nancy and Ray.
