Slow Progress Today, Good news for the near Future

Mike had a rough night last night with pain from his second surgury. The Neurosurgion (I wish this blog had spell checker) spoke to me and and said it was common because he had a lot more work done the second time. Things should improve regarding that over the next few days. They expect he will have some chronic pain going forward, but managable.

She also said that if all goes to plan she would expect him to be ready for transport back home to in patient rehab around the end of next week. I am home today and tomorrow morning to do in person visits to 2 facilities so Mike will have the best information to make his choice of where to go by.

He was ready to get in bed therapy when I left this morning and wasn't looking forward to it because he was hurting, but was going for it anyway because that represents the stage he was at before the seconf surgury. Now there are no steps backwards anymore!!!

I added some photos to a slide show that show the hospital, his floor and where his room is to give all of you a feeling for his surroundings. A picture of him getting his hair washed this morning is there too. He was in some pain, but not about to give up this oportunity. What a Ham!!!

I will be looking at Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in Rockville, and National Capitol Rehabilitation Center in DC before going back tomorrow about noon.

I'll have another update and pictures of Mike tomorrow.

Slow and steady wins the race! With good new for the future, I am sure Mike will prove himself triumphant. Thanks Jeff for posting some new photos, it's great to see that smile shinning. Hopefully Mikey was able to snag her phone # in the process. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help; research, phone calls, whatever it may be...there's lots of people here in Boston ready and willing. Love to all and can't wait to see Mike (and everyone) again! -Robin

I'm so sorry to hear that Gotz is in so much pain today. I have to admit however that it is very refreshing to hear what we all already know. And that is what a fighter he is. The fact that he is in all that pain and still ready for his in bed therapy is a true testament to how strong he is. Red, I really hope your in person visits go well. It will be so nice to have him back home again. As always, thanks so much for the update (and the pictures!).
Much love,
Crystal and Randy

Mike - We've never met but I think I know you pretty well from reading your blog and the comments left by the folks who love you. As I arrived a work this morning,I met a friend of yours - Gary Slaght. I had just parked my wifes scoot (a '99 Ultra converted to three wheels by a Texas company named Motor Trike) when I was hailed by a stranger who turned out to be Gary. He told me about your injury and we talked about trikes and other ways to make motorcycles accessible. I'll keep you in my thoughts and will lookin on your progress. I look forward to meeting you and to riding with you in the future. Keep your spirits up. Papa West

Wohoo! I can't believe it has already been a week since Joe and I saw you last! You've made so much progress moving to the new floor and starting therapy even after ANOTHER SURGERY! We can't wait to see you this weekend and of course are looking forward to the rehab move closer to home! I've heard good things about both of those rehab units, so I'm sure you'll do great at the one you choose! Hope you have a better night and can't wait to see you! love and miss you!

Hey Mikey!!
We just got home about 45 minutes ago and finished going through your blog! This is such a great way to let you know we are all thinking about you and wishing you well every second of the day!!! We can't believe how great you looked 1 day after your second surgery and how well you put up with our whole crew!!! I (Lisa), was really looking forward to putting you through a work out, but clearly needed to hold back due to your surgery...next time you won't be so lucky!!:) We know that you are going to pull through this because if anyone has the spirit and fortitude it is definitely you!! So work really hard and know we all love you and are thinking of you!!!
Love Uncle Tommy, Auntie Lisa, Matt, Mike, and Alex
